Tokyo confirms first cases of swine flu

Two cases of swine flu were confirmed in Tokyo after two schoolgirls returned from a trip to New York. Tokyo and the surrounding districts are home to around 36 million people.

So far, there have been no deaths from the H1N1 virus in Japan and the approximate 250 reported cases have mostly been mild.

According to the World Health Organisation website, there are over 11,000 reported cases of the H1N1 virus in 42 countries around the world. The virus is known to have killed 80 people, the vast majority of them in Mexico, where it was first reported.
